The room was cold, but her dull and empty stare was colder. Fatigue was winning the battle against coffee and studying, leaving her textbook open with angst. The TV, which had somewhat muted it's self a while earlier, displayed a rather large man standing at a podium in front of a large glass building.  She could make out the reporters and cameras in the reflection of the building behind the man. He was speaking to them with the most seriousness, and wore an expression of pure confusion. Subtitles in Japanese and English infiltrated the bottom and top of her television screen. This she had gotten use to, being in Japan for a few weeks. The man then lost all her attention and she began to think of other things for a brief moment. She thought of her trip over, and as to why her parents would send her all the way there for further studying. She only had one last year left and eight months of it had been spent in London. Figures, she thought resting her chin on the dank, mellow desk, must have just wanted me gone. She glanced over at her motionless cell phone, feeling a wave of minor depression crash into her. The phone sat in silence, a large shadow surrounding it, making it blend in with the table. The way she saw the phone made it appear that the phone was laying in a puddle of its own false tears, being ignored and wanting to make noise. It had only rung once since she arrived, and that was a wrong number. She let a long and lonesome sigh slip from her throat.

“Might as well,” She said turning her attention back to the television, and reaching for the remote. “Maybe they finally found an end to this damn Kira mess.” She raised the volume up a bit, and sat the remote back beside her book.

The man speaking she had seen a few times before, on TV and in person. Soichiro Yagami was the father of a student that had been assigned to her during a lecture, and some kind of police officer but that was about all she knew about him. His son, Light, was another story, she had met him the first week she arrived in Kanto. She felt awkward around him for some reason, and she couldn't figure out if it was because he was the smartest damn teenager in Japan or the fact that he was indeed a guy. His dad didn’t need to brag about him being the top of every class, it was kind of obvious. A tale out of school was that he had even helped the police on a few investigations. She shook her head. I thought that was illegal anyways, she thought, but then again this is Japan not America.

“Guess I'm going to have to get use to this.”

She looked back at Yagami, and felt like he could jump out of the TV and smack Kira himself. She squinted as he began to speak, and listened to what he was saying. She made sure that her notebook was close by in case something valuable came up in the press conference. She had never seen a man wear such a serious expression before, a deep scowl dented his face, and his black eyes appeared heartless.

“Other agencies and Japanese law enforcement are working together to find the fugitive known as “Kira”. We are doing our best, and trying to keep everyone safe, and we will continue to search.”

Keaira sighed, disbelief clouding her judgement. “I'm sure you are.” She got up from her chair, and started for her vacant kitchen. The tiled floor chilled her throbbing feet, but woke her up more. She snatched a gloomy mug from the cabinet and poured what would be her fifth cup of coffee that evening. She put enough sugar in it to drug her mind for an hour, and then drowned it in creamer. She sipped at it, going over Kira in her head.

He was killing criminals, how bad of a person could they actually be? They were going to rot in prison for the rest of their lives anyway, why not speed up the process. Then another thought came to her mind. Kira could kill a prisoner, and they could actually be innocent, leaving an innocent man dead and giving the police a greater reason to call them “Evil.” She had thought about the sequence of murders every day since they surfaced in the media. She had started off thinking that it was just a disease or something infecting the prisoners threw medication. But once they started to die all over the world that thought became corrupted.

She was about to take another sip, when Yagami's voice blared through her apartment. This caused her to throw the cup on the counter and dive to the floor in front of the television. She stared at Yagami as if he were some sort of God as he spoke.

“It came to our attention early this morning at a meeting of the International Criminal Police Organization, that a World famous detective has a strong interest in the Kira case. He tells us that he will help us bring Kira to justice!”

Keaira felt her heart fly into her throat. The only detective that was so renowned that he would take on such a deal as the Kira case, had to be L. She had heard of L, and her father had even worked under him in California for a short time a few years back. She had never met him, but she recalled hearing him speak. Usually an odd voice over would corrupt his vocals and make him sound alien like. But she heard him speaking normally to her father via computer and retriever. His voice was quiet and a bit gloomy, but her father said that if he was agitated enough his voice would become loud and controlling. She wanted to hear him yell over the intercom and be demanding, but just like everyone else, she wanted to see his face. She figured since he was known as the World's Greatest Detective, that he would look tall, sleek, and well dressed. She sighed at the picture in her mind, for some reason it didn't fit the L her father described. He said that he was rather serious, but had a playful notion to him. He always thought of the best way to catch a criminal or to solve a case. She thought more, feeling lucky that her parents had moved her from D.C. to California for her schooling. But as her school year ended so did the case her father was on. He transferred the family to London and she never heard anything of L again. She glanced back up at the TV, and sighed feeling miserable

“Well, if it is you, I hope you get this guy.” She said talking to her now blank television.  “And maybe if I get lucky...I'll get to hear your voice again...”

She finally gave up the fight against sleep, and retreated to her frozen bed.  She was actually grateful that the bed was cold, and that the heat from the TV had made her warm enough to need it. She quickly drifted off, and ignored the blaring of sirens and car horns outside her apartment.

L stared out the window down at the diminishing traffic, and the many people now flooding the street. He had been glancing over at the building across from his. He looked at the room in front of him, and noticed that they had left their TV on. He sighed, fighting a familiar emptiness before taking his place back in front of his computer. He made a call to his assistant, and looked at his screen in a drowsy daze.

“If only sleep could come so easily to me.” His words broke through the numbing silence, and vibrated off of the machine in front of him. He stood once more, being pulled towards the window to watch the people below him scurry about. He found it a trouble to have to see them all in such a rush. Like there was so little time to do anything, but in reality it had only been two minutes, and there was a mountain of time left.

People just don’t understand. He mused, turning his head from side to side. The World would be so less troubling if it wasn’t so quick. “Anyway,” he breathed, letting his hair fade his view of the citizens. “If it were slower I wouldn’t have so much fun.” He smiled, forced but still a smile. “I’m so lucky I dislike people.” The smile slipped as a feeling of deep loneliness replaced the confidence that always shone. He lifted his head enough to see his reflection peering back at him. Or am I? He turned his head, hearing a muffled noise from his computer. He glared at the machine, then stalked away from the window to answer the call.

Not sure if this will be the only part I'll upload of this. This FF is from 5 or 6 years ago and I just started editing it from the original version.
